EASTERN UNIVERSITY RECEIVES GRANT TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO MINORITY STUDENTS
St. Davids, PA, October 21, 2009: The Eastern University Office of Development has secured a $95,000 grant payable over one year to help provide access to higher education for minority students. Eastern was selected under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2009 to apply for this funding through the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE).
The University will use this grant to support two student retention officers who will focus on access and retention for minority students who enroll at Eastern University. The retention officers will work closely with these students to help make sure that their academic, personal and/or financial needs are addressed as they progress towards graduation.
With this FIPSE grant, 63% of the program is financed with Federal money, and 37% is financed with non-governmental sources. The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education at the U.S. Department of Education supports meaningful and lasting solutions to emerging problems in postsecondary education. FIPSE awards grants that support innovative educational reform ideas, evaluates how well they work, and shares the lessons learned with the larger education community.
