DR. MEDHURST SPEAKS ON POLITICAL RHETORIC NOV. 3

St. Davids, PA, October 19, 2009:  The Communication Studies and Political Science Departments at Eastern University present Dr. Martin Medhurst speaking on Political Prooftexts: The Use of the Bible in Presidential Discourse: 1977-2009. Dr. Martin Medhurst is Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric and Communication and Professor of Political Science at Baylor University and an expert in the rhetorical presidency and political ommunication (http://www.presidentialrhetoric.com/).  His lecture is Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Warner Library Atrium, 1300 Eagle Road, St. Davids, PA.  

Professor Medhurst holds the B.A. from Wheaton College, the M.A. from Northern Illinois University, and the Ph.D. from Penn State University. He is the author or editor of nine books, including Eisenhower's War of Words: Rhetoric and Leadership (1994), Beyond the Rhetorical Presidency (1996), Critical Reflections on the Cold War (2000, with H.W. Brands), and Presidential Speechwriting (2003, with Kurt Ritter).

Dr. Medhurst's essays have appeared in The Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs, Critical Studies in Mass Communication, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Communication Studies, Western Communication Journal, and the Southern Communication Journal, among others.

Professor Medhurst is the founding editor of the journal Rhetoric & Public Affairs and of the scholarly book series of the same title, both published by Michigan State University Press. He is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the Marie Hochmuth Nichols Award for Outstanding Scholarship (1995 and 1997).
