Student CCD Gallery : M1

M1: The Crab Nebula, a supernova remnant from a gargantuan explosion which appeared to earthlings in 1054 AD. The remains of a giant star's death throes, it has a rapidly rotating neutron star at its center, the compressed core of the original star. The neutron star rotates 30 times per second, is about the size of Philadelphia, weighs more than the sun, and is more than 33 trillion times denser than diamond!
