M17: This massive cloud of gas and dust is called the Omega Nebula. 35 newly-born hot stars are in the center, obscured by the glowing cloud. There is enough gas in the cloud to form 800 stars the size of the sun and it would take a beam of light 15 years to travel from one end to the other.
