Student CCD Gallery : M51

M51: The Whirlpool Galaxy is so named because of its large, bright arms.  These arms are areas of new star formation cause by the gravitational interactions between it and its companion galaxy shown at top.

15 exposures per color filter and 22 exposures luminance.  60 seconds 
each.  Combined using LRGB.
