Student CCD Gallery : M81

M81: Bode's Nebula was not discovered to be a galaxy until the early 20th century.  The spiral arms of this galaxy are especially pronounced (as with M51) due to a recent interaction between it and a neighboring galaxy (M82).  At a distance of 12 million light years, this is one of our closest and brightest galaxies.

9 exposures per color filter and 17 exposures luminance.  60 seconds each.  Combined using LRGB.
