Sol, the Sun, is the star that the Earth orbits. At 93 million miles away, it takes light from the surface of the sun 8 minutes to reach Earth. Notice the sunspot groups on the surface, as well as the dark 'filaments', which are solar prominences (explosions) seen from above.
